'In a Nutshell' - fresh ideas to keep you aware and informed
A Leader's Job is to Get Results
Few would argue that achieving results is the prime objective of leadership. Yet there are endless theories about how to do it. We need more evidence and less opinion to move the debate forward and provide practical guidance on the 'hows'.
Daniel Goleman's work on the biology of social and emotional intelligence provides a clear quantitative framework for structuring the components of effective leadership. Based on this, researchers have identified six key leadership styles that get results. Sustainable success lies in being able congruently to access the right style at the right time rather than embody just one habitual style all the time. The good news is that they can be learned.
So what are the 6 styles and how do they show up?
Coercive leaders demand immediate compliance
Authoritative leaders mobilize people toward a vision
Affiliative leaders create emotional bonds and harmony
Democratic leaders build consensus through participation
Pacesetting leaders expect excellence and self-direction
Coaching leaders develop people for the future
Leaders who consistently get the best results are those who are flexible and seamless in adopting the particular style appropriate to the circumstances - and may indeed use all the above styles in the course of a week. (see source here)
